The Rose
The rose is perhaps the most iconic flower in the western Tattoo tradition. Represented in many different colours with no shortage of accompaniment, the rose has endured in Western tattooing, perhaps to equal length as the lotus in the east. The most common symbolism, particularly if red, the rose is the flower of love, dedicated to the goddesses Isis, Venus, and Aphrodite. The thorns may symbolize the inevitable pangs of lost love. Roses have also a long been associated with Mary, mother of Jesus, and rose windows in cathedrals and churches are her symbol. The red rose or thorns may also be associated with the blood of Christ.
A more esoteric interpretation, would place the rose as representing the mystic heart and cosmic center. The rose springs up from muddy earth as a symbol for triumph of the spirit over matter. The rose has also become been used as a symbol of secrecy, perhaps because of the manner in which the pedals hide within its centre.
White roses were painted on Roman banquet hall ceilings to remind diners that whatever said of the table was to be remain a secret. The Latin phrase “sub rosa”, meaning “beneath the rose” still means that any information shared should be kept confidential.
